This position is responsible for substation major equipment used on the Southern Company system with primary focus on all of Alabama Power Company’s territory. This responsibility includes specifying major equipment that meets the Southern Company needs and applicable industry standards. Activities also include project assignments and technical consultation for new installations and replacements along with failure analysis. Spare equipment management for all major equipment on both the Transmission and Distribution systems is a function of this position as well.

JOB RESPONSIBILTIES

  • Providing engineering expertise to specify and order substation major equipment for construction projects and spare equipment needs. Along with power transformers, circuit breakers, circuit switchers, and regulators; specifications for special equipment such as mobile substations, mobile switches and, gas-insulated switchgear, metal-clad switchgear are also created from this position.

  • Creating commodity numbers and requisitions for new equipment orders.

  • Receiving and issuing new equipment in Maximo.

  • Review and approve equipment manufacturer drawings and test reports to ensure that equipment complies with specifications and meets required delivery schedules.

  • Assigning equipment to be used for new projects and replacements due to failure or other reasons.

  • Managing the entire power circuit breaker fleet for APC including specifying, purchasing and scheduling the breaker deliveries to coordinate with construction schedules for all new installations and failure replacements. (circuit breakers ranging from 4kV through 550kV)

  • Managing the regulating transformer fleet for APC including specifying, purchasing and coordinating the breaker deliveries to coordinate with construction schedules for all new installations and failure replacements in Distribution Substations and 46kV regulating stations.

  • Managing the availability of spare parts for breakers and regulators currently in service at APC.

  • Supporting Transmission Maintenance Areas during equipment related outages. This support includes assignment of replacement equipment, creation of failure work orders, shipping and logistics, and technical support during the outage restoration.

  • Providing material support for upgrading APC breakers during infrastructure improvement projects. This involves material specification and procurement for CT’s to be added to the breakers, DC trip and close coil conversions, etc.

  • Performing substation loading studies for transmission and distribution stations and providing these results to the Planning departments.

  • Providing active representation on various Alabama Power, Southern Company and external committees related to substation major equipment.

  • Ensuring the quality and value of substation major equipment and equipment repairs by performing appropriate QA inspections, witnessing of final testing in manufacturer’s facilities and performing design reviews with manufacturers and consultants.

  • Coordinating with manufacturers on substation equipment problems and Warranty issues.

  • Providing hands on engineering support for the installation, operation, maintenance, diagnostic testing, troubleshooting, repair, re-design/re-manufacture of substation major equipment as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

  • Four year BS degree in Electrical Engineering required.

  • At least three years substations experience strongly desired.

  • Substation maintenance, major equipment, or planning experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of utility electric grid operations.

  • Strong understanding of major substation equipment including power transformers, breakers, regulators, circuit switchers, capacitor banks, and inductors.

  • Strong understanding of the National Electric Safety Code and OSHA safe operating practices.

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.

  • Proven analytical, teamwork, negotiation and presentation skills.

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office applications and AutoCAD.

  • Knowledge of budgets and the capital expenditure process.

  • Ability to work in high pressure situations and handle stress.
