Multiple Designer positions in the Electrical Design Department will be filled with this posting.

Positions are as follows: Location Number of Openings

Designer (Jr. level – 1-4 years’ experience) Birmingham, AL 1

Designer (Sr. level – 5 years’ experience) Birmingham, AL 1

WORK LOCATION

  • Positions will be located in Birmingham, AL, however candidates living outside of the area may be considered with the expectation that they could successfully telework and would be willing to travel to work and/or field location on a routine and as-needed basis.

  • This position will require a mix of both field and office work.

  • Some office work can be performed remotely (telework/work from home).

JOB SUMMARY

These positions are responsible for preparing electrical power system design for power generating facilities across the Southern Company fleet. In these roles, individuals will produce engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements to facilitate construction, operation, and maintenance of electrical power systems. Activities will be executed with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and costs. The Designer, Sr. position will provide guidance, oversight, and Quality Assurance reviews for detailed design activities. These positions require some travel (approximately 20%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Develop electrical design documents for power generation facilities

  • Assist in the evaluation and purchase of electrical equipment

  • Prepare material take-offs for cost estimates and material procurement

  • Review vendor design documents to ensure conformance to design requirements

  • Coordinate work with other disciplines, clients, suppliers, and contractors

  • Provide on-site support during construction, startup, and checkout

  • Develop scope definition documents and provide schedule inputs

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent required

  • Additional technical training preferred (technical school or software provider)

  • Associate degree preferred for Designer, Sr

Work Experience:

  • For Designer (Jr. Level) :

  • Familiar with designing electrical systems within industrial environments preferred

  • Experience completing technical assignments with detailed instructions from supervision

  • Competent with AutoDesk Suite

  • Experience with document management systems such as D2 Documentum preferred

  • Experience with Quality Assurance programs preferred

  • Experience communicating technical direction or providing training preferred

  • For Designer (Sr. Level) :

  • 7 years-experience designing electrical systems, preferably within heavy industrial facilities or new construction projects

  • Proficient in AutoDesk Suite

  • 3D modeling experience or ability to learn 3D software

  • Experience completing technical assignments with limited instructions from supervision

  • Scope development, schedule input, material takeoffs, and fabrication drawing review

  • Experience with electrical system design for Southern Company hydro plants preferred

  • Experience developing electrical power system design including single line, elementary, and wiring diagrams

  • Experience with Plant Data Management System (PDMS) software for cable and conduit design

  • Experience with document management systems such as D2 Documentum

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office products is required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • High level of initiative and ability to effectively plan, organize, and execute assigned work

  • Effective oral and written communication of technical topics

  • Self-starter and strong problem-solving skills

  • Customer focus with a willingness to meet the needs of our customers and solicit feedback

  • Electrical Design codes and standards

  • Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory is preferred
