JOB SUMMARY

Primary responsibilities include implementing Georgia Power’s groundwater strategy for compliance with the federal and state Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Rule. Position will ensure compliance requirements are met or exceeded and groundwater corrective action evaluations and decisions are made with broad understanding of impact to the company. This position will be responsible for developing/communicating/implementing and leading compliance strategies for company business units and facilities. This person will work closely with Southern Company Technical Services. Specific activities include managing third party environmental firms to meet and exceed CCR Compliance obligations and objectives related to groundwater monitoring, data interpretation, and potential corrective action. This person is expected to provide input and advice associated with groundwater issues associated with other regulatory programs (CERCLA, HSRA, Brownfields, etc.). This includes knowledge of groundwater sampling, data tracking, interpretation, statistical methods, groundwater modeling, and hydrogeological interpretations within the setting of the Georgia Rules for Solid Waste Management. Responsibilities include semi and annual report development, review, and regulatory submittal. This position will be expected to interface with internal customers, regulatory agencies, vendors, and related industry groups.

This position will be filled as a geologist or similar depending on educational background, experience, and qualifications. This position is located in Atlanta, GA.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Expert knowledge and experience to implement CCR groundwater monitoring requirements, environmental assessments, groundwater modeling, statistical methods and groundwater corrective action

  • Coordinate review, and submittal of compliance documents

  • Develop external and internal relationships to ensure groundwater and other regulatory programs are implemented successfully, well documented, and well communicated.

  • Experience with federal and state CCR regulations, Georgia Solid Waste regulations (specific to landfill groundwater compliance). Additional experience with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Georgia Hazardous Site’s Response Act (HSRA), Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Recovery Act (CERCLA) is a plus.

  • Develop and implement cost-effective, pro-active compliance strategies and programs for CCR-related regulations and permits.

  • Monitor environmental regulatory activities that impact company operations.

  • Work with regulatory agencies and external groups to promote informed, balanced and science-based regulations and permit requirements.

  • Develop partnerships with all levels of business unit and facilities management to implement low- cost and effective environmental programs.

  • Support the Company's environmental policies in all areas, including environmental stewardship initiatives.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable environmental laws and regulations

  • Demonstrated knowledge with groundwater fate/contaminant transport models

  • Demonstrated knowledge of groundwater statistical methods and analyses

  • Ability to synthesize technical information and communicate in a manner suitable for technical and non-technical personnel

  • Ability to work with limited supervision and maintain a flexible schedule which may include non-traditional hours and travel

  • Judgment skills necessary to make decisions, solve problems and implement solutions

  • Project and contract management experience preferred

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • BS or BA degree in geology, engineering or a science related field (i.e. biology, chemistry, environmental science, etc.).

  • Professional accreditations and certifications a plus

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience in interpreting and implementing groundwater compliance programs consistent with environmental regulations. Experience in working with interdisciplinary teams.

  • Experience in interpreting environmental regulations and interacting with regulators
