WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL

  • This position will be based out of Metro-Atlanta (Forest Park, GA) .

  • Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently three (3) days in-office and two (2) days telecommute (subject to adjustment).

  • Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.

  • This position will require some travel (day and overnight, up to 50%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service.

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing project scoping, estimating, design and construction support services in support of Georgia Power’s distribution projects that are associated with transmission capital projects. This position will be responsible for supporting Georgia Power’s planning and budgeting processes (Gated Process) by providing complete and accurate estimates of material, labor, and total costs associated with distribution projects. The position will require field visits and will involve travel in the GPC footprint, up to 50% of the time. Candidate must provide superior customer service and be able to prepare and schedule construction of jobs to meet committed service dates. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for processing all documentation in accordance with Compliance requirements.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.

  • BS Engineering or Engineering Technology is preferred.

  • Professional Engineer's License (PE) in lieu of the above bachelor's degree

Experience:

  • Prior experience in distribution design, construction, or maintenance is required.

  • Prior experience in project development and cost estimating is preferred.

  • Previous experience in designing and presenting large and complex projects in a power utility company to management is preferred.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the phase-gated project management process is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • General Knowledge of distribution planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance.

  • General knowledge of the activities associated with surveying, land acquisition, obtaining easements and permits.

  • Knowledge of electrical system operations, distribution systems, underground and overhead construction practices.

  • Detailed knowledge of the Distribution Engineering design standards, processes, procedures, and tools used to scope, estimate, and design distribution line projects.

  • Detailed knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations governing the design and construction of distribution line projects.

  • Detailed knowledge of distribution construction methods, equipment, techniques, and cost estimating.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office products, JETS, Designer/GIS, Socket, DistView, NJUNS and other distribution software applications currently in use to estimate and design distribution projects.

  • Ability to prioritize and organize work to manage multiple projects and meet strict and sometimes competing deadlines.

  • Exhibits strong problem solving, oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to establish and maintain peer and customer relations across organizational lines.

  • Proven ability to build consensus and achieve results through effective use of persuasive communication and formal presentation skills.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for providing project scoping and estimating services in support of Georgia Power’s distribution projects. Specific requirements are as follows:

  • Create a safe work environment through personal commitment to safety.

  • Apply distribution engineering expertise to accurately scope projects and to provide quality cost and duration estimates in a timely fashion.

  • Develop detailed project scopes and conceptual design packages used to produce accurate cost estimates and project schedules and as the basis for detailed design activities.

  • Develop detailed distribution design and construction packages, including coordination of easements, DOT permits, and Transmission encroachments.

  • Provide supporting project engineering services, such as field work, pre-engineering meetings, approval routing, pre-construction meetings, and job closeout.

  • Provide timely and accurate cost estimates to customers including Project Management, Area Planning, Distribution Planning, Transmission Planning, and Transmission Maintenance Support to facilitate budget development and management.

  • Provide input on the development and refinement of engineering estimating units used in the estimating system (JETS) to ensure accurate estimates of equipment, material, labor duration, and total costs.

  • Participate in and support Southern Company Transmission activities and initiatives.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

Travel:

  • Up to 25-50% travel should be expected within the Southern Company footprint

  • Travel frequency and location will be dictated by the specific project(s) supported

Telecommuting:

  • This position may have some flexibility for remote teleworking, with the expectation that the successful candidate would be willing to travel to Forest Park and/or project site(s) on a routine and as-needed basis.
