Sr, Business Support Analyst (Engineering & Construction)

Job Summary:

The Sr. Business Support Analyst is responsible for financial and process analysis, modeling, and planning to support construction activities for Southern Company Gas and its subsidiaries. This position develops and tracks New Business capital budgets for the Engineering and Construction departments, provides cost and budget metrics for CEO and executive level reviews, and provides support for construction related activities (metrics, data analysis, system support, etc.) for Southern Company Gas Utilities.

Functional Expertise:

  • Draft monthly capital reports for CEO and Executive level reviews.

  • Research New Business variance drivers and prepare written explanations.

  • Develop capital budget and forecast for New Business projects (quarterly, annual, and 10-year plans).

  • Draft monthly O&M reports for management review.

  • Assist with O&M budget and forecast for Construction Operations departments.

  • Create visual presentations (tables, charts, graphs, etc.) of financial data and production metrics to summarize report information.

  • Generate completion reports for large projects for submission to Regulatory Agencies.

  • Calculate, present, and obtain approval for annual File Cost updates.

  • Complete ad hoc business analytics requests to support the business.

Business Acumen:

  • Compile and interpret financial and non-financial information to determine past performance, project future results, and identify trends to help drive business decisions.

  • Develop construction costs metrics such as cost per meter, cost per foot, meter counts, etc. Monitor cost drivers and identify areas of greatest impact.

  • Conduct detailed income statement variance analysis of financial results, i.e. actual vs. budget, actual vs. prior year for assigned customers; summarize financial transactions and events in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for quarter end and year end reporting.

Engagement:

  • Develop monthly capital variance analysis by working with utility construction managers and present findings to senior leadership for use in top level reviews.

  • Liaison with Regulatory Agencies for reporting and auditing of major programs involving Construction Operations.

Driving Results:

  • Review New Business capital budgets monthly and create reforecasts as necessary based on business trends, process changes, and actual results.

  • Review O&M budgets monthly and create reforecasts as necessary based on actual results and future estimates.

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

  • BA/BS Degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Mathematics, or related discipline

Preferred:

  • Master of Business Administration

Related Work Experience

Required:

  • 8 years of experience performing financial/business planning and analysis, analyzing income statement accounts, and/or providing variance explanations

  • Experience working with senior executives on an individual or team basis

Preferred:

  • Utility, Natural Gas, or other energy industry experience

  • Working knowledge of WMIS/ARM, PeopleSoft Financials, Oracle Planning, OACS, Maximo, or similar systems

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required:

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word and moderate proficiency in other Microsoft Office tools

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to solve problems

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

  • High degree of initiative and ability to work independently and collaboratively

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to work across a matrix organization structure with horizontal and vertical teams

  • Strong attention to detail

Preferred:

  • Intermediate knowledge of Power BI, Power Query, and/or SQL

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Infrequent Travel (0-5% travel): The incumbent may be required to travel on a very limited basis. Trips may require air travel and/or overnight stay away from home for one or more nights.

  • This position occasionally requires prolonged standing or walking.

  • Position is located in an office environment.
