Southern Company Tax Accountant in Atlanta, Georgia
JOB SUMMARY :
This is a senior level tax accountant position that handles all aspects of the property tax cycle for multiple business units with varied business models. The position is responsible for accurately and timely preparing state and local separate company and centrally assessed state unit value property tax returns. This position reviews assessment notices for potential valuation differences and initiates appeal discussion with the property tax assessors. This position also performs research analysis, files tax abatement and incentives requests, and responds to notices from tax authorities. This position includes preparing budgets for estimated tax liability, preparing journal entries, and completing monthly and quarterly account reconciliations. The position includes the timely processing and payment of property tax bills. This position will also be charged with providing support to the other accountants on the team as well as assisting in creating, standardizing, and implementing new processes and procedures.
JOB REQUIREMENTS :
Bachelor’s Degree or higher
Proficiency with tax research software
MS Excel – advanced proficiency
MS Word – intermediate proficiency
Time management skills
7 years property tax experience in a large accounting firm or large public company environment
Experience working in the public utility or energy industries
IPT CMI -Property Tax designation
Oracle, PeopleSoft, PowerPlan experience
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :
Prepare state and local separate company and centrally assessed unit value property tax returns, review assessments and initiate valuation discussions, and process tax payments.
Performs research analysis and provide business unit support for M&A inquiries, FERC reporting, SOX requirements, and various other business needs as well as responding to notices from tax authorities.
Prepare property tax budgets, prepare and submit monthly journal entries and adjustments, complete monthly and quarterly property tax account reconciliations
Provide support to the other accountants on the team as well as assisting in creating, standardizing, and implementing new processes and procedures.
Participates in cross-training initiatives to ensure that the department has coverage in the event of absences and to provide opportunities for employee growth and development.
Assists property tax supervisor with technology implementations including testing the new software
- This position will include 5-6% travel
