Electrical Design Engineer

Southern Company Generation Electrical Design

This position will be based from The Energy Center (3535 Colonnade Parkway) in Birmingham, AL

JOB SUMMARY

The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for the overall Electrical Engineering design efforts for retrofit projects at generating plants. Responsibilities, ensuring the adherence to design codes and standards which includes the development and control of Electrical Design schedules, budgets, and procurement activities as well as the technical oversight and direction of engineering and design personnel in the production and interpretation of Electrical Design documents.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited College or University required

  • Advanced degree in related field is a plus

  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration a plus

  • Leadership experience, strong management and organizational skills

  • Experience with budget, schedule and change management

  • Heavy Industrial field experience

  • Knowledge of electrical design codes and standards

Background/Experience:

  • Electrical engineering design experience (10 years preferred) in power generation or other heavy industry

  • Responsible for Electrical scope definition, budget, schedule, change management / mitigation and forecasting personnel work load demand

  • Responsible for providing technical leadership for design team in development of total Electrical design package including specifications, single lines, elementary diagrams, wiring diagrams, physical layout both above and below ground, cable list, bill of material details , lighting and grounding drawings, block diagram drawings, etc.

  • Responsible for close interaction with Electrical and Project Management, plant and other discipline personnel, construction and start-up personnel to ensure smooth bi-directional transfer of design information

  • Strong understanding of the National Electric Safety Code, National Electric Code, and OSHA safe operating practices

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Operational knowledge of power plant systems, protection and control strategies

  • Design oversight to ensure compliance with all applicable codes and standards, QA requirements, federal, state, and local regulatory requirements

  • Oversight and technical direction of other engineers, designers, and drafters

  • Must be able to effectively communicate with other groups and disciplines to ensure maximum effectiveness

  • Proficiency in problem solving, analytical, and interpersonal/communications skills

  • Makes sound independent decisions with minimal information and consultation with management

  • Must be able to lead multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Proven ability to assemble and lead a team toward a common goal

  • Proven ability to define, manage and forecast workload

  • Experience with AutoCAD 2016 or higher, AVEVA experience is a plus

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products, WORD, EXCEL and POWERPOINT

  • Moderate travel

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position can require some travel – approximately 25% per year.

  • This will include both day-trip and overnight travel, primarily within the Southern Company territory.
