This position provides support for operating issues affecting the reliable operations of the bulk electric system for Southern Company Services Transmission’s Energy Management Systems (EMS). This position is responsible for the implementation, execution, and improvement of operational processes to ensure system availability for supported database systems by the EMS department; used by Southern Company operating companies’ transmission control centers (OPCO TCC’s) as well as the power coordination center (PCC) and their respective back office personnel.

This position provides day to day operational support for maintaining several MS-SQL and Oracle solutions.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Monitor performance of database systems resources and query throughput

  • Optimize SQL Code as necessary

  • Monitor and maintain database storage resources

  • Monitor and maintain database maintenance plans for backups, index rebuild/defragment, and database statistics

  • Oracle/SQL Server Database Installation, Upgrades, Migrations and Configuration

  • Install database software service packs and cumulative updates as necessary

  • Maintain database documentation as required

  • Maintain and administer database security access

  • Maintain the tuning, indexing and performance of our existing database infrastructure

  • Perform database Ad-hoc backups and restores

  • Trouble shoot and resolve database connectivity issues

  • Follow Change Management processes to implement database configuration changes

  • Follow Problem Management processes to troubleshoot and resolve recurring issues

  • Proactively monitor and respond to database Alerts.

  • Support OPS team activities and functions (e.g. Provide application deployments)

  • On-call requirements to ensure 24 x 7 support of database operations

  • Ability to obtain Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) and Insider Threat Program (ITP) security clearance is required

Experience and Education:

  • 3 (or more) years’ experience in Information Technology, some Database Administration, preferably SQL Server and Oracle.

  • MCSE/MCSA certifications preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent work experience

  • Experience supporting complex computer systems is a plus

  • Working knowledge of computer system infrastructure, operations, and security.

  • Working knowledge of computer operating systems including: AIX and Red Hat LINUX

  • Knowledge of Source Code Control System, such as Git, is a plus

  • Knowledge of electric utility transmission operations is preferred

  • Must have a customer focused attitude with a desire and ability to learn about the Transmission core business and its needs.

  • Must have analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with competing priorities as well as delegation skills as appropriate.

  • Ability to bring consensus and buy-in among people with different views and agendas.

  • Ability to grasp complex Energy Management Systems operational issues, risk factors, and business drivers.

Other Requirements:

  • Willingness to be on call as needed 24x7

  • Willingness to adhere to stringent federal and corporate requirements regarding how work is performed and security of EMS systems and information

  • Travel (10%-15% of time) to attend Southern Company functions and maintain system hardware
