Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC), headquartered in Birmingham, AL, operates Southern Company's six nuclear reactors at three locations in Georgia and Alabama: two reactors at Plant Vogtle, near Waynesboro, GA; two reactors at Plant Hatch, near Baxley, GA; and two reactors at Plant Farley, near Dothan, AL. We currently have an opportunity located at our Nuclear corporate headquarters in Birmingham, AL for a Monitoring and Diagnostics Center Data Analytics Engineer. This position is within the M&D Center in our Nuclear Innovation and Technology Department.

M&D Center Data Analytics and Integration Engineer (Birmingham)

Summary of Position Duties:

This position is assigned to the Monitoring and Diagnostic Center and provides support to the Southern Nuclear fleet operating units as well as Vogtle Units 3&4 currently under construction. The M&D Center Data Analytics and Integration Engineer will utilize complex software tools to remotely monitor and detect adverse equipment trends and anomalies that pose a threat to station operation. In addition, this position will strategize innovative methods to integrate data acquisition of important equipment and process parameters to improve equipment reliability and reduce operation and maintenance costs.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the M&D Center including alarm response management, event notification vetting, and IT support needs.

  • Perform detailed analysis of trends and notify site experts of impending risks.

  • Develop software algorithms and models for equipment anomaly detection.

  • Tune and refine models to optimize detection capability

  • Formulate SNC Fleet M&D Center strategy and initiatives, including data acquisition methods, data integration, historian upgrades and new technologies.

  • Provide technical assistance to the Project Manager regarding future growth and development of the M&D Center data acquisition network implementation including wireless technology, artificial intelligence, and software platforms.

  • Participate in EPRI Technical Advisory and/or Industry steering committees

Job Requirements:

  • On-site Maintenance, Operations or Engineering experience in a nuclear power generation facility is highly desired.

  • Hands-on field, troubleshooting, testing, or motor/pump fabrication experience.

  • Previous experience utilizing technical software for data analysis and trending

  • Strong diagnostic experience with Vibration or Electrical Signature Analysis tools

  • Experience with software algorithms or programming languages a plus.

  • 3 years experience in OPS, Maintenance, Engineering Support or testing group.

Educational Requirements:

  • B.S. in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university required; however, a Bachelor of Science Degree in an engineering curriculum combined with in-depth experience in power generation or pulp and paper plants will be considered.
