WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE & TRAVEL

  • This position work location will be based Birmingham, AL.

  • Relocation assistance is available if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance of Birmingham.

  • The Resource Planning team currently has a hybrid work schedule requiring the individual to be in the office on three days a week. We do incorporate flexibility, but also the job could require more than three days in the office in a week if necessary.

  • This position will require approximately 25% travel (day-trip & overnight), primarily within the Southern Company retail footprint.

  • Travel includes both day-trip and overnight travel, primarily within the Southern Company retail footprint, but may include anywhere in the intercontinental US

This position is an engineer or analyst responsible for the evaluation of electric power requests for proposals (RFPs) supporting procurement efforts for the Southern Company retail operating companies. These activities are crucial in serving the unprecedented growth in capacity and energy needs of customers. This role requires exemplary project leadership skills and the willingness and ability to adapt to dynamic schedules. Utilization of various models and tools and effective communication are key skillsets sought for this position.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct economic evaluations of resources submitted into retail operating company capacity and renewable RFPs

  • Support Procurement teams in strategy, development, and execution of RFPs

  • Support operating company IRPs, rate cases, capacity certifications, and other filing requests

  • Support renewable subscription program pricing efforts

  • Develop and implement the Renewable Cost Benefit Framework

  • Create, maintain, integrate, and optimize analytical tools related to data management, reporting, and evaluation

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Math, Economics, Finance, Business or other related analytical field/discipline is required

  • Advanced degree in one of these areas or a related field is desirable

  • Production cost modeling experience – experience with Aurora is desired

  • Proven analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex topics verbally and in written form

  • Knowledge of integrated resource planning, transmission planning, power plant operations, power pool operations, utility finance (including revenue requirements and cash flow analysis), generation economic evaluation, engineering economics and related computer modeling desired

  • Ability to identify strategic issues and build consensus regarding potential solutions
