Southern Company Tax Accountant in Birmingham, Alabama

Tax Accountant

Description

This position will be responsible for a number of tax-related duties including: the monthly income tax provision (ASC 740/FAS 109) calculation; tax and regulatory compliance/reporting with the exception of income tax return preparation, which is not a responsibility of the Alabama Power Tax Department; providing tax account analysis information for monthly, quarterly, and annual management reports and meetings; tax account reconciliation processes and tax-specific internal control performance and testing; communicating tax-related information for both internal and external service providers; providing tax research and planning assistance; and coordinating with Treasury personnel on tax payments.

Candidates with the following preferred qualifications are encouraged to apply:

Experience & Education:

  • BA or BS in Accounting required

  • Certified Public Accountant and/or Certified Management Accountant preferred

  • 2 years of experience preferred in corporate tax/financial accounting (with an emphasis/experience with tax provision calculations) in public accounting, industry or a combination of both

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in preparing and/or reviewing ASC 740 (FAS 109) calculations

  • Strong tax research skills

  • Knowledge of applicable accounting rules and regulations, including ASC (FASB), SEC, FERC & IRS guidelines, and the ability to interpret and make recommendations

  • Strong analytical and communication skills – reconciliations, variance review, accounting application examination as well as good oral and written communication skills including ability to communicate accounting concepts with non-accounting personnel

  • Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and meet deadlines is required

  • Coordination of work assignments with the schedules and requirements of other employees is also a requirement

  • Computer literate in Microsoft applications as well as experience with an electronic tax research service preferred
