Southern Nuclear, headquartered in Birmingham, AL, operates Southern Company's six nuclear reactors at three locations in Georgia and Alabama: two reactors at Plant Vogtle, near Waynesboro, GA; two reactors at Plant Hatch, near Baxley, GA; and two reactors at Plant Farley, near Dothan, AL. This position is responsible for providing electrical engineering design services and field support for designs for Southern Nuclear at Plant Farley. Design services include preparation/coordination of designs, safety evaluations, engineering analyses, drawings, cost estimates and schedules for plant modifications and retrofits. Work involves field walk downs for constructability and interfacing with other site departments to ensure design functional requirements. Also, this position will provide technical oversight for designs prepared by outside engineering firms.

Job Requirements:

Education Requirements :

  • Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering (not Engineering Technology) from an ABET accredited program required

  • Professional Engineer Registration is desired

Experience Requirements:

  • At least 3 years prior experience in nuclear power plant related engineering field is preferred

  • At least 3-5 years of prior work at a power plant desired

  • Experience in the design (or modification) and operation of nuclear power plant systems preferred

  • Experience in the design (or modification) and operation of power plant systems preferred desired

  • Experience with the development of temporary configuration changes

  • Experience with the development of design specifications

  • Prior performance of design related calculations (i.e., voltage drop, breaker coordination, load study analysis, instrument setpoints, etc.)

  • Experience with selection and application of electrical components including motors, transformers, protective relaying, breakers, inverters, large lead storage batteries, battery chargers and inverters

  • Experience in the design, installation, and testing of digital control systems is desired

  • Experience with ETAP is desired

  • Drafting experience preferred

  • Experience with AutoCAD desired

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities expected:

  • Working knowledge of codes and standards related to the electrical discipline

  • Working knowledge of power distribution and control design

  • Familiarity with environmental qualification programs, motor operated valves programs, cable management, cable termination methods and electrical penetration assemblies in containment structures

  • Familiarity with cable tray, conduit and support design and evaluation

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Proven organizational skills with ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously

  • Capable of working efficiently and effectively across organizations

  • Strong problem solving, decision making abilities

  • Ability to make sound engineering judgments based on experience and proper application of good engineering practices

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft office products, specifically WORD, EXCEL and POWERPOINT

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to gain unescorted access to Southern Nuclear's Farley Nuclear Plant is required

Please note: This position may require the successful completion of the SNC Initial Engineering Training as a condition of continued employment. The training is approximately 14 weeks long and is a rigorous period that may require studying after work hours.
