Product Engineer (UL 891 and UL 1558 LV and MV switchboard/switchgear)

Job Summary:

The Product Engineer is responsible for the selection, configuration, application, and pricing of the PowerSecure manufactured and purchased low voltage/medium voltage (LV/MV) products. By outlining specific drawing and other related documentation needed to define switchboards/switchgear solutions for submittal and manufacturing purposes. This includes selection of the applicable components such as circuit breakers, relays, instrument transformers, power supplies, switches, controls, etc.

The Product Engineer will work with various groups to aid in purchasing, inventory management, and enhancement of LV/MV pricing tools. The Product Engineer will work with Product Services to help support their installation oversight and start-up/commissioning activities. The Switchboard/Switchgear Product Engineer will also work with Product Services to help support installed base of LV/MV product solutions.

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills):

  • BS degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Required.

  • 4+ years of combined work experience as a product engineer for another manufacturer, or other manufacturers, of UL 891 and UL 1558 LV and/or MV switchboard/switchgear.

  • Experience between manufacturing, test, and field services primarily focused on supporting LV/MV switchboard/switchgear is desired.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite.

  • Proficient with AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT.

  • Proficient with one or more EATON/ABB/Siemens and/or Schneider Electric’s LV/MV pricing and configuration tools.

  • Familiarity with the UL safety standards for UL 891 LV switchboards and UL 1558 LV switchgear is desired.

  • Familiarity working with, and/or selecting, Schweitzer and/or Beckwith relays is desired.

  • Familiarity working with, and/or selecting, Intelligent GenSet Control platforms (ex: DIEF, easYgen) is desired.

  • Familiarity working with, and/or selecting, PLCs is desired.

  • Familiarity working with generator sets, transfer switches, backup power systems, and/or utility-connected distributed power generation and microgrid systems is desired.

  • Familiarity working with one or more of ABB’s, EATON’s, Schneider Electric’s, or Siemen’s LV/MV and circuit breaker product selectors and pricing tools is desired.

  • Familiarity working with one or more of ABB’s, EATON’s, Schneider Electric’s, and/or Siemens LV/MV circuit breakers.

  • Ability to understand the differences between the various Ground Fault Protection Schemes [Zero Sequence, Residual (Radial), Ground Source Return, and Modified Differential].

  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills required to define custom switchboard/switchgear product solutions.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills are required.

  • Ability to act independently and resourcefully to solve problems and ensure high levels of technical accuracy and quality.

  • Ability to be flexible and discern appropriate plans of action when working on multiple tasks.

  • Implements and maintains engineering objectives and initiatives such as cost savings and complexity reductions.

  • Strong Code Interpretation and Application understanding (NEC, NFPA, IBC, etc.).

    Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide technical and commercial leadership for the development and sale of new product platforms and permutations that deliver competitive advantage in the market, meet financial/ growth goals, and exceed customers’ performance and quality expectations at or below target costs.

Key Items of Responsibility:

  • Sales support in participating in Project Technical Reviews to help guide in the selection of the most sensible LV/MV products needed for a given project application and establish the mechanical details (Front View Drawings, Floor Plan Drawings, One-Line Drawings, and Device Schedule).

  • Support Pricing by working with the Estimating Team to update and improve pricing tools used to price LV/MV solutions.

  • Process RFQs and negotiate pricing where applicable with LV/MV vendors for switchboard/switchgear solutions.

  • Support Marketing by providing marketing and technical documents.

  • Support Engineering through review of vendor switchboards/switchgear drawings ensuring accuracy and suitability for the application and distribution.

  • Collaborate with mechanical engineering to ensure that PowerSecure’s switchboards/switchgear solutions are manufactured to the UL 891/UL 1558 safety standard and UL 891/UL 1558 file.

  • Support Procurement by working with Purchasing and Engineering to create drawings/specifications and Long Leadtime Bills of Material for each switchboard/switchgear being processed.

  • Review and approve, or disallow, substitution requests and change orders.

  • Respond to RFIs from vendors on switchboard/switchgear that PowerSecure purchases.

  • Support Product Development as required.

  • Participate as requested in company training events, applicable industry and product related training or certification classes and marketing – industry sector events. Travel as necessary to client projects, vendor, jobsite, and event locations (about 10% travel)

    Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Professional office environment with significant sitting and computer usage.

  • Some walking will be required to review products in process on the shop floor.
