Southern Company Dispatcher in Glen Ellyn, Illinois




Functional Expertise:

•Possesses an understanding of the properties of natural gas

•Possesses a basic understanding of the regulatory environment/requirements of the utility industry

•Possesses sound decision making skills based on ethical judgments in alignment with company policies and procedures

•Ability to perform effectively as a self starter in an emergency response based environment

•Ability to effectively perform the functions of a dispatcher in a utility environment

Business Acumen:

•Ability to identify, assess, prioritize and effectively dispatch emergency work in a timely and accurate manner

•Ability to work in a safety sensitive environment and make decisions on a daily basis to ensure the safety of our customers

•Ability to make sound and timely business decisions while managing adversity in a fast paced environment

•Effectively manage daily workload by review and reallocation of work to ensure timely a response to all required work; normally responsible for approximately 50 employee/day

•Strong decision making skills to effectively manage resources to meet company and customer requirements

•Effectively manage customer appointments through proper monitoring and follow-up to ensure customer commitments are met

•Ability to function as a supportive member of a team on a consistent basis

•Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently while maintaining a clear perspective of the criticality of each while ensuring the successful execution of all

Required :

•High School diploma/GED


• BA/BS degree

Related Work Experience:


•6 months of dispatching experience or equivalent/related work experience

•Weekends/Weekdays are required. Must be flexible with work schedule, including the ability to work overnight. Schedule may be modified dependent on business need


•2 years in a dispatching or operating role

• Applicant may possess a combination of equivalent education and work experience.

•Emergency Response experience is a plus.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

•Must be available after hours for call out as needed

•Must be able to sit for extended periods of time

•Significant time spent utilizing computer
