Supervisor, Asset Protection
The purpose of this position is to protect company assets from external threats, encumbrances, and encroachments for all distribution and transmission pipelines, their associated abutments, land right-of-way’s and easement rights. This is an operational role that requires ensuring compliance is maintained with state, federal and corporate pipeline safety regulations and standards for Southern Company Gas (SCG) and subsidiaries.
Serves as company Asset Protection liaison between excavators, municipalities, builders, developers, landowners, logging operators, SCG Contractors and/or their agents / contractors, etc. by responding to any issues or concerns.
Geographical Information Systems (GIS,) ability to interpret, modify, and read atlas maps.
Understanding of advanced analytics, regression analysis, machine learning and/ or artificial intelligence.
Perform quality oversite of contractor locating partners, right-of-way contractors, and in-house staff to ensure compliance and quality are maintained.
Serve as liaison to the excavating community, internal stakeholders and locators by resolving Difficult to Locate Issues to ensure a proper locate is completed and no down time claim occurs.
Lead, coach, and manage in-house technicians. Provide guidance on locating best practices, aid in identifying difficult to locate assets, engage with excavators working near Nicor pipelines.
Provide education sessions to locate contractors, excavators, landowners, and homeowners on safe digging practices.
Monitor and coordinate compliance and safety issues for pipeline patrols, right-of –way maintenance, and pipeline marker demarcation. Manage watch & protect (stand-by) operations, for work performed on or near SCGs High Profile facilities by 2nd or 3rd party excavators.
Oversee right-of-way inspections and verify adherence to PHMSA CFR 192 requirements. Document and resolve AOC conditions by coordinating vegetation clearing operations across multiple stakeholder groups.
Coordinate submerged crossing inspections
Respond to Asset Protection High Profile facilities, incidents and emergencies on and off our Right-of-Ways
Locates gas mains on the Right-of-ways per SCGs construction policy for SCG Contractors.
Administer Contractor Operator Qualification (training, testing and certification.)
Represent Nicor during meetings with municipal stakeholders, and third-party excavators.
Support dispatch & resource management by providing fact-based feedback related to staffing constraints.
Conduct objective fact-finding sessions and post incident analysis
Research easement and encroachment issues and provide recommendations to the Manager, Asset Protection for follow up.
Facilitate meetings related to Asset Protection contracts and projects prior to projects beginning.
Schedule excavator intervention activities related to analytic risk assessments on future excavations.
Represent company at Local Damage Prevention meetings.
Provide direction and oversight to field operations to improve reporting on damages per Federal and State Requirements.
Follow-up on potential grid issues with the One Call Center.
Oversee and inspect all right-of-way maintenance, remediation, mowing and side trimming in assigned area to ensure it has been completed to SCG specifications.
Support Trade Show, Industry Committees and One Call events regarding Asset Protection.
Ensure compliance and requirements are met relating to contracts, patrols, inspections and audits.
Assist Management in the administration of Asset Protection contracts.
Ensure required Asset Protection documentation through Compliance Tracking Systems and SharePoint Sites or other electronic means remain up to date.
Monitor OQ and training documentation for contractors and Asset Protection employees.
Review quality issues with management and implement improvements to protect assets.
High school diploma or GED
Valid driver's license
- Associates /BA/BS degree with a Real Estate Appraisal License or equivalent academic education and field operations experience
Related Work Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years utility field operations experience or related work experience
2 years experience in locating gas
2 years previous supervisory experience
Specific Skills & Knowledge:
Knowledge of quality assurance concepts, Computer literacy - basic proficiency
Well-developed interpersonal skills including influencing and/or negotiation
Operator Qualified in accordance with Company Plan: the ability to obtain within required timeline.
- Knowledge of easement rights, engineering, locating and surveying principles, knowledge and experience with SCG pipeline system, knowledge of real estate terminology; knowledge of terms used by developers and Bilingual skills.

Carrying equipment up to 30 lbs.
Walking long distances to inspect facilitates
