Safety & Health Specialist

This position is responsible for providing safety technical assistance and consultative services to assigned business units and making presentations of injury/illness prevention and safety educational material in safety meetings and training sessions. The incumbent will conduct incident investigations and produce reports of findings and recommendations and will create and work with corporate communication to send out company-wide safety communication (injuries/illnesses, accidents, investigations, safety alerts, near misses, etc). The position will also manage corporate safety and training programs and initiatives. This position will be filled at a level 3-5, but has the ability to progress to a level 6 based on successful demonstration of defined criteria.


  • Excellent proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)

  • Ability to manage the Mississippi Power Safety and Health intranet page

  • Excellent computer skills required

  • Ability to manage projects required

  • Knowledge and experience in the design and implementation of programs and procedures preferred

  • Great customer service skills and customer-focused attitude

  • Experience with data manipulation (creating reports, trending data, pivot tables, etc)

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain positive business relationships

  • Demonstrate outstanding oral and written communication and project management skills

  • Demonstrated ability to develop presentations and speak publicly to a variety of audiences

  • Demonstrated safety leadership and ability to conceptualize and develop safety programs to meet the needs of customers

  • Strong planning, organizing, coordinating, problem solving and decision making skills.

  • Demonstrate and ensure behaviors consistent with Southern Style and Principle-Centered Leadership

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety or related is preferred


  • Prepare presentations and compile data to support company programs

  • Develop safety initiatives related to technology advances

  • Project management of safety related initiatives

  • Organize resources to support safety committee initiatives (videos, presentations, banners, etc)

  • Record and file company accident and incident reports and investigations

  • Perform data manipulation to identify safety trends and focus areas

  • Compile and report historical data for use with intra-company communication

  • Report company safety performance data to OSHA and peer groups to facilitate peer benchmarking

  • Manage company safety programs including employee recognition programs

  • Consult with business units and act as a resource for leadership for current and historical programs

  • Makes presentations for accident prevention and safety education material

  • Create and work with corporate communication to send out company-wide safety communication (injuries/illnesses, accidents, investigations, safety alerts, near misses, etc)

  • Perform safety committee training for new committee members

  • Facilitate company-wide safety workshop to bring together all committee chairs and enable best practice sharing

  • Develops and/or facilitates the development of various safety and training programs and/or procedures to introduce new safety concepts or new compliance programs to the workforce

  • Represents Company on Southern Company working groups
