Telecom Field Ops Technician

Description

Purpose

The Telecom Field Operations Technician (Fiber) is responsible for the installation, maintenance (both reactive and preventive) and project support on Southern Company's voice, data, and telecommunications transport networks. These networks include digital microwave, SCADA/MAS, AMI, LTE, fiber optic, and voice and data wireless systems. These systems are installed, maintained, and repaired in accordance with established standards, service levels, operational processes, and applicable work agreements.

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the installation, maintenance (both reactive and preventive) and project support on Southern Company's data and telecommunications transport networks.

  • Responsible for participating in on-call procedures/operations.

  • Responsible for interfacing with and coordination of contractors and/or vendors associated with the Field Operations function as appropriate.

  • Responsible for interfacing with the business partner and other Technology groups related to problems and installations as appropriate.

  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to billing and performance processes and procedures.

  • Responsible for maintaining accurate circuit and equipment inventories and documentation of assigned sites.

  • Responsible for documenting fiber route information (traces, power levels, splice points, etc.)

Job Requirements

  • Two-year degree (college/technical/vocational) or equivalent military training or equivalent hands-on experience in electronics is required.

  • Two-year degree (college/technical/vocational) or equivalent military training or equivalent hands-on experience in telecommunications is preferred.

  • Understanding of the various topologies, e.g., telecommunications (microwave and/or fiber), wireless, data and voice networks, and how they interface with each other.

  • Ability to logically troubleshoot and repair voice systems, data networks, telecommunications (microwave and/or fiber) systems, and ancillary equipment (e.g., alarm systems, DC systems).

  • Working knowledge of radio communication systems. FCC or equivalent license for radio repair is preferred.

  • Knowledge of voice and data wireless systems and troubleshooting techniques.

  • Knowledge of PC hardware, operating systems, and associated peripheral and software components.

  • Must have demonstrated personal computer skills.

  • Ability to work independently, self-starter with good time management skills.

  • Ability to interface with, direct, and/or coordinate various contractors as needed.

  • Must have good verbal and written communications skills.

Other Requirements (Fiber Specific)

  • Proficient with Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers (OTDR).

  • Proficient with splicing single-mode and multimode fiber optic cable.

  • Experience with Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) of various types. (Ex. stainless steel tube, tight buffer tube, star, etc).

  • Knowledge of associated line hardware and accessories used to secure ADSS and OPGW fiber.

  • Experience with All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) fiber.

  • Experience with Preformed Line Products (PLP) and Alcoa splice cans.

  • Experience with transporting fiber optic trailers.

  • Must take and pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam.

  • Ability to work extended hours during emergency restoration.

Education / Experience

  • Two-year degree (college/technical/vocational) or equivalent military training or equivalent hands-on experience in electronics is required.

  • Two-year degree (college/technical/vocational) or equivalent military training or equivalent hands-on experience in telecommunications is preferred.

  • 2 – 4 years’ experience in a similar role or other field operations technician role preferred.

  • Proven track record in support of problem resolution and project implementation expected.
