Utility Arborist Technician

Reporting locations – Macon / Southern Georgia

Reports to – Jon Balkcom, Utility Arborist Supervisor


To ensure the highest reliability of Georgia Power Company's electric transmission system, regular field inspections must be completed to identify and remove hazards caused by vegetation. This position will be responsible for inspecting Georgia Power Company's transmission system to identify and document these hazards, and in some cases scheduling contract tree crews to complete any necessary work to remove the hazard, and auditing completed work to insure adherence to contract specifications. Extensive, statewide, overnight travel will be required.

Position will be filled at a Level 4 - 7 Nonexempt dependent upon the qualifications, skills and experience of the successful candidate.


Education and Job Experience

  • BS in Forestry, Urban Forestry, Natural Resources, or related field highly desired.

  • Minimum 2-yr Forestry degree or 2-yr degree in related field.

  • ISA Arborist certification a plus.

  • Basic knowledge of electric operations and electric transmission systems.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to learn and apply proper utility arboricultural practices.

  • Ability to learn the maintenance and operation of the Company's distribution and transmission electrical systems.

  • Ability to learn and operate GIS based computer systems.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret field notes and maps and to draw conclusions from data for decision making in the field.

NOTE: Occasional overnight travel within Georgia required .


  1. Field inspection of assigned transmission lines, to identify and document vegetation-related hazards. Inspections will be performed span by span, from the ground or air as directed. Detailed reporting and record-keeping required. Maintain constant communication with other Forestry personnel to ensure that all vegetation-related threats to the operation of the transmission system are removed in a timely manner. In some cases, assign work to contract vegetation management crews, and follow up to ensure work was completed per contract specifications.

  2. Notify property owners and developers of incompatible vegetation planted on the right-of-way. Follow up to ensure that the incompatible vegetation is removed from the right-of-way. Evaluate on-going and completed contractor field work to ensure all work meets specifications and is being performed effectively and efficiently. Initiate corrective action when work is not in compliance with Company specifications.

  3. As directed, investigate and evaluate trouble tickets and abnormal situation reports generated by other company personnel in the field, and recommend corrective action.
