Manager, System Planning
The role is responsible and accountable for managing engineering system planning support activities for all SCG utilities and non-regulated companies. The role is accountable for establishing processes to prioritize and recommend capital projects needed to efficiently maintain system reliability. This is a shared service provider role focused upon the planning support for new business, public improvements, system improvements, transmission, storage facilities and main replacement projects. Additionally, the role is responsible for coordinating daily operating support and emergency situational analysis.
Manage the engineering and technical support for the development, building, and validation of multiple seasonal hydraulic models for all utility distribution systems.
Expand and direct strategies to understand, forecast and illustrate current and future distribution and transmission system capacity needs.
Approves long term capacity plans for the optimization of the gas system for all utilities and non-regulated operations.
Reviews peak day and situational hydraulic plans for Gas Control, Supply, Storage, and Transmission systems.
Develops engineers by teaching gas industry knowledge through coaching, in house classes, external training and field experiences.
Assures engineering recommends the most cost effective short and long-term solution for all projects analyzed and developed for the distribution and transmission systems.
Oversees the development, validation and implementation procedures to ensure the hydraulic models (steady state and transient) are current, accurate and usable for all needs of the AGL.
Responsible for establishing departmental and capital budgets for system and capacity improvements.
Prepares project prioritization lists used in the annual capital budgeting process.
Collaborates with Construction, Operations, Gas Control, System Operations, Transmission, Storage, Meter Shop, IT, Sales and Billing to produce effective models.
Collaborates with Engineering Design to assist on the best design for the situation.
Provides and identifies leadership development opportunities for engineers including coaching, mentoring, and both structured and opportunistic challenges.
Recommends how Gas Control, Storage, Transmission, and System Operations manage system operations on daily and emergency basis.
Manages staff performance, selection, development, succession, and retention for a department of approximately 12 technical employees.
Oversee hydraulic analysis, due diligence, and feasibility studies performed to evaluating non-regulated business opportunities.
Facilitate strategies to ensure that performance requirements are sustained, including established service level, quality, and productivity metrics.
Prepare and administer capital budgets and monitors budget variances. Provide monthly variance explanations and take appropriate actions to achieve year end targets.
Perform scheduling and budgeting activities to ensure that budgeted projects are constructed within budget year.
Manage departmental O&M budget to ensure established targets are achieved.
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, ABET accredited institution
Engineer in Training certification
Preferred: Professional Engineering License
Project Management Professional
Master’s Degree – technical or business
Related Work Experience:
Required: 10 years minimum of progressive experience in gas engineering or operations
Preferred: 2 years of system planning experience
2 years of supervision
2 years of project management experience
Gas supply planning experience
