JOB SUMMARY:

The purpose of this position is to manage and provide legal support for the company’s state commission and FERC regulatory proceedings, as well as provide advice and support for strategic regulatory initiatives. The individual also is responsible for understanding the company’s regulatory obligations, identifying its potential compliance risks and providing appropriate legal advice and training to business units, including governmental relations training and compliance. In addition, the individual is responsible for managing outside counsel assisting with these matters.

Successful candidate can work out to our Atlanta, GA or Naperville, IL location.

This position follows a hybrid work schedule. Successful candidate must report to the office three (3) days per week.

Functional Expertise:

  • Manage pending and potential regulatory proceedings.

  • Support the company’s strategy development and execution.

  • Recommend and supervise the appropriate use of outside counsel.

  • Manage outside counsel costs and budgets.

  • Identify and investigate potential regulatory and compliance risks, review proposed policies. and practices and provide appropriate training and legal advice to business units.

  • Participate in industry training.

Business Acumen:

  • Counsel business unit on strategic approach for achieving desired business and regulatory outcomes.

  • Advice and counsel business units on potential compliance risks, review and draft policies and provide training.

Engagement:

  • Self-motivated team player with ability to identify and resolve issues with little to no supervision.

  • Act as liaison with outside counsel on pending matters.

  • Regularly interact with business units to understand company operations, initiatives, policies and procedures, identify potential compliance risks.

  • Participate in appropriate legal and industry groups to identify best practices in operating a utility and managing regulatory matters.

  • Regularly inform the Associate General Counsel and Chief Regulatory Counsel, and relevant business leaders of the status and significant developments in the law or any pending regulatory matters.

Driving Results:

  • Manage regulatory proceedings in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

  • Provide pragmatic legal counsel to business units to meet business objectives.

  • Attention to detail and able to prioritize effectively to provide timely legal services.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:

Required:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree

  • Excellent academic credentials

  • Member of State Bar in good standing

RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • Counsel: Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in major law firm and 0-2 years’ experience in corporate law department, with focus on regulatory or litigation.

Preferred:

  • Experience in advising companies in a regulated industry.

SPECIFIC SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:

Required:

  • Excellent written, verbal and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective interpersonal relationship skills.

  • Analytical and logic skills.

  • Ability to work independently and perform “lead” role in developing and ensuring execution of strategies.
