Supervisor, GIS & Asset Data


The main responsibility of this position is to supervise a team of GIS Specialists, Contractors and Record Clerks tasked with the management of the Geographic Information System (GIS) data and other geospatial / data maintenance services for Nicor Gas. The incumbent will coordinate system changes and provides technical coordination between Engineering, Field Operations, Construction Operations and other stakeholders. This role provides leadership and technical direction with respect to GIS system maintenance, design, and integration and assists the manager in overseeing the company and contractor staff performing to routine GIS data maintenance activities.

Positional duties include but are not limited to:

  • Leads, coordinates and directs the assignments of GIS Specialists and Technicians (up to 15) relating to GIS capital activities (Landbase, Project records, As-Builts, etc.)

  • Managing the budget and accounting for contracted resources

  • Ensures workflows with various internal departments are accurate, up to date and documented

  • Analyzes current business processes and recommends best practice solutions

  • Interfaces with Information Services (IS) GIS Support group to drive development and data model changes

  • Directs and manages the development of databases for tracking department work production and creates reports in PowerBI, Sharepoint, Operations Dashboard and SQL

  • Oversees GIS Specialists and Technicians, develops performance goals, systems for calculating metrics and delivers performance feedback and reviews

  • Provides subject matter expertise on Nicor Gas geospatial issues (GIS and other technology strategy, process improvements, etc.)

  • Serves as Subject Matter Expert on GIS projects and solution definition workshops

Functional Expertise:

  • Proficient with ESRI ArcGIS 10.2x

  • Proficient with MS Office 365 (Access, Excel, Word, Teams, Etc.)

  • Proficient with Microsoft PowerBI

  • Experienced with financial accounting (budget management)

  • Exceptional drawing/data requirements review, analytical, and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies

  • Ability to function independently and as a team leader

  • Ability to handle multiple assignments and changing priorities

  • Ability to work effectively with limited direct supervision

  • Effective written/verbal communication and organizational/analytical skills with proven problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to meet and track SLAs, metrics, etc. on a variety of simultaneous projects and initiatives

  • Thorough understanding of ESRI ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcSDE, versioning, and geoprocessing

Business Acumen:

  • The incumbent coordinates system changes and provides technical coordination between Engineering, Field Operations, Construction Operations and other stakeholders. This role assists the manager in overseeing the company and contractor staff performing to routine GIS data maintenance activities.


  • Builds and maintains cohesive working relationships with internal and external consumers of asset data and analytics to ensure continued alignment of goals. Acts as ambassador for the GIS & Asset Data Department and promotes its use via outreach and excellence

Driving Results:

  • Monitors and report progress of plan initiatives and strategies.

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

  • Bachelor’s in Geography/GIS, Computer Science/Information Systems, Engineering or related discipline equivalent work experience.

Related Work Experience:


  • 5 years’ work experience in database entry and data analysis with experience in customer support, utility asset design, data quality control and assurance.

  • Experience leading and developing resources (Performance planning, Training, goal setting etc.)

  • Experience with ESRI geodatabase design, structure and management

  • Familiar with data standards and assisting in the development and implementation of new procedures

  • 3 years experience in Leading/handling/managing asset data, personnel and systems including GIS within a gas utility, pipeline, or other related field

  • Experience with a content and document management applications with integrations into workflow


  • 3 years of field installation of utility assets

  • 3 years of supervision of field crews installing utility assets and collecting field data.

  • 2 years of supervisory/management experience leading GIS, asset data, or analytical departments or project teams

  • Experience using ESRI Data Reviewer and Workflow Manager Extensions

  • Strong understanding of content and document management applications

  • Development and deployment of field GPS and data collection systems including ESRI mobile applications

  • Experience supporting the development of IT systems and applications related to asset data, asset performance, compliance assurance, and/or operational efficiency

  • Knowledge and experience meeting PHMSA regulations including 49 CFR Part 192/193/195

  • Experience leading data conversion and migration projects utilizing industry-standard GIS

  • Enhance existing GIS capabilities by seeking opportunities for improvement of existing methods, tools, or workflows
