Environmental Affairs Specialist


Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Surveys and manages aquatic vegetation in Hydro reservoir projects and other company facilities to minimize impacts to hydropower generation, public health, recreation, navigation, ecology, etc. from non-native and native vegetation

  • Provides monitoring, source reduction, and application of insecticides for managing mosquitoes in APC reservoir projects and other company facilities

  • Assists with pest and vegetation management requirements around plant sites

  • Increases public awareness of mosquito and aquatic vegetation issues by speaking to students, lake user groups, and individuals

  • Assists with regulatory and legislative issues regarding pesticides

  • Assists Corporate Real Estate with shoreline management issues when necessary

  • Provides support to Environmental Stewardship Programs as necessary

  • Assist in maintaining boats, equipment, and product inventory

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with regulatory agencies and the general public

Candidates with the following preferred qualifications are encouraged to apply:


  • Bachelor’s Degree (Environmental Science, Fisheries, Biology, Chemistry, etc.) preferred


  • At least three (3) years experience at identifying and managing aquatic vegetation in large reservoir systems preferred

  • Must possess State of Alabama Aquatic Pesticide Applicator License (or ability to attain within 90 days of hire) and CDL with Hazmat Endorsement (or ability to attain within 90 days of hire)

  • Experience with mosquito identification and management (preferred)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of aquatic ecosystems

  • Must be able to survey and identify aquatic plant and algae species

  • Be able to apply appropriate control measures where applicable (with emphasis on chemical control) and evaluate results

  • Must possess strong organizational and record keeping skills

  • Experience operating boats and pesticide application equipment (required) with airboat operating experience preferred

  • Knowledge of aquatic herbicide labels, application equipment and methods, NPDES permits, FIFRA, and other State and Federal laws and regulations

  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to work with stakeholders and regulators, balancing their needs with Company needs

  • Ability to work well as part of a team

  • Ability to work in extreme temperature conditions around and on large bodies of water

  • Ability to lift heavy objects
