Specialist II, III Environmental
Southern Company Gas (SCG) is seeking an experienced Environmental Specialist interested in environmental compliance and permitting for energy infrastructure projects in Virginia. This position will provide environmental support and expertise for SCG’s Virginia based business unit, Virginia Natural Gas (VNG). The applicant should have relevant environmental permitting, inspection, and field survey experience, with the ability to lead and participate in a cross-functional team environment. The position provides the opportunity to use your environmental knowledge and skills to support complex projects, acquire permits, complete risk assessments, conduct due diligence, and advise multidisciplinary teams on environmental risk, compliance, and permitting strategies.
Primary responsibilities include working closely with engineering/design teams, new business groups, construction operations, environmental peers, contractors, and external consultants to help obtain and maintain compliance with all required federal, state, and local environmental regulations, licenses, permits, and approvals for construction and subsequent operation of the proposed facilities.
The candidate should demonstrate proficient knowledge and experience with biological field survey protocols, erosion control and stormwater inspections, federal, state, and local permitting, and agency coordination. Applicants with experience permitting projects with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Section 404 permits), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and the Virginia Marine Resources Commission would be preferred.
The job will be based at VNG’s corporate headquarters in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Due the nature of this position, a hybrid work model (office and remote work) should be expected.
Job Functions, Duties & Responsibilities (List is not exhaustive and may be supplemented)
Stormwater and Erosion Control inspections, permitting, due diligence, and outreach support
Identification, management, and mitigation of environmental risks
Creative thinker with ability to recommend innovative solutions to environmental challenges
Experience with project/task planning, budget, and schedule management
Oversight of environmental field studies and consultants, including development/ management of vendor contracts / purchase orders /invoices; ensure sourcing processes comply with corporate procurement and financial policies
Ability to support multiple projects with multifaceted environmental and regulatory issues and assist in resolving complex environmental matters
Maintain current knowledge of, and ensure compliance with, pertinent federal, state, and local environmental policies and regulations as well as company policies
Translate regulations and permits into actionable tasks
Provide guidance on alternatives to minimize environmental impacts
Review, monitor, comment on, and effectively communicate business implications of emerging environmental legislation and regulations
Independent decision-making in a fast-pace environment, with minimal oversight
Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Ideal candidate will have:
Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred)
3+ years of directly relevant experience
Knowledge of environmental permitting and regulations in Virginia
Oral and written communication skills as well as analysis, problem solving, compliance, leadership, and process efficiency skills
Knowledge and experience with construction stormwater regulations, erosion control practices, and inspections
Experience with wetland and stream determination and delineation surveys
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field
Experience: 3+ years
- Virginia Department of Environmental Quality ESC and SWM Inspection Certified
This position will be in an office and field environment.
Project field visits are required during all types of weather (hot, cold, wet).
Travel will be required travel for the position. Most travel will consist of single day events; however, overnight may be required based on project location within Virginia. There may be an occasional out of state trip, but this would not be frequent.
