Southern Nuclear, a subsidiary of Southern Company, manages and operates six nuclear power electric generating plants that provide approximately 20 percent of the electricity used in Alabama and Georgia. The Nuclear Chemist will report to the Chemistry Shift Operations Superintendent and will have the following responsibilities:

  • Develop and revise processes and procedures in the areas of radioisotope Counting Room activities, diesel fuel oil sampling and analysis, and Primary and Secondary Chemistry procedures.

  • Serve as the sampling system and lab instrumentation expert on selected systems, including troubleshooting and vendor interface

  • Assist with Nuclear IQ data management applications

  • Implement Radiological Effluent Technical Specifications

  • Prepare and update the annual Radiological Effluent Release Report

  • Conduct observations of technician training and conducts on-the-job training and task-performance evaluations of trainees

  • Maintain the Primary, Secondary, and Closed Water Strategic Plans and subsequent revisions to ensure compliance with Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) guidelines

  • Initiate environmental monitoring reports

  • Administer the chemical treatment and chemistry control of the closed cycle cooling water systems

  • Prepare material and services purchase orders and act as purchasing representative for the Chemistry Department

  • Participate in Corrective Action Program and coordinator duties

  • Monitor the meteorological tower data and prepare the annual report

  • Provides oversight for the REMP, groundwater and sewage treatment plant operations and reporting

  • Assume Subject Matter Expert duties for selected laboratory systems

  • Qualify and participate in the Emergency Response Organization (ERO).

  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • B.S. degree or higher in an applied science or physical science discipline

  • Two years of experience in chemistry including one year of radiochemistry experience

  • Two years nuclear plant experience desired

Job Preferences

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in Chemistry

  • Completion of a nuclear industry initial chemistry training course or equivalent

  • Knowledge of nuclear plant systems and processes

  • Working knowledge of EPRI, Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), and industry chemistry programs

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Sound analytical chemistry skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Knowledge to work with vendors and service suppliers on procurement, repair, or resolution of chemistry system problems

  • Familiarity with the INPO Systematic Approach to Training (SAT)
