New Business Development Manager – Large C&I and Large Load

The purpose of this role is to identify, evaluate, and secure new growth opportunities for Atlanta Gas Light and Chattanooga Gas. This role will oversee and manage a geographically dispersed team responsible for leading and executing strategic initiatives that drive customer growth and revenue in the large commercial, industrial (C&I), and large load segments. This position will identify new business opportunities, cultivate strong relationships with key stakeholders, and coordinate with internal teams to deliver innovative, cost-effective energy solutions that meet the unique needs of high-demand customers. The successful candidate will serve as a market expert and trusted advisor to internal and external partners, grow existing relationships, provide technical expertise, expand the company’s customer and revenue base, strengthen the company’s value proposition, and ensure high levels of customer satisfaction across market segments to drive long-term sustained growth.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITES:

Business Execution

  • Develop and implement comprehensive new business development plans aligned with the company’s growth objectives.

  • Identify, evaluate, and pursue new business opportunities to expand market presence and drive revenue growth.

  • Oversee the pipeline of new business projects from initial contact, through contract execution, and project completion.

  • Lead complex commercial negotiations including structuring long-term contracts and service agreements that align with customer needs and company objectives.

  • Oversee and manage customer onboarding to ensure customers receive service in a timely and cost-effective manner.

  • Partner with internal teams – engineering, system planning, land services, construction operations, project support, fields operations, legal, and other key stakeholders on constructability timelines of new projects and revisions generated by the customer.

  • Establish and monitor goals that are consistent with the department’s and company’s overall strategy.

  • Drive results through performance management of team including setting expectations, evaluating results and taking corrective action as needed.

  • Balance external stakeholders (customers, regulatory agencies, permitting jurisdiction, etc.) needs with company goals and objectives to reach a favorable resolution to stakeholder issues and/or concerns.

  • Prepare, monitor, and execute on departmental O&M and Capital budgets.

  • Provide variance explanations for O&M and Capital budgets and develop appropriate strategic, corrective actions.

  • Analyze and interpret key performance indicators.

  • Present departmental performance and report on the progression of major projects to leadership and key stakeholders.

  • Understand and monitor industry trends, regulatory developments, and technological advancements to identify new growth opportunities and adjust strategies accordingly.

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement to be more efficient and effective.

  • Advocate for the use of natural gas as a clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy source within the evolving energy landscape.

  • Foster and facilitate clear, consistent, and effective information flow both internally and externally.

  • Convey complex ideas and challenges in a clear and concise manner

Development of Others

  • Manage staff selection and performance development through coaching and training opportunities.

  • Mentor and guide growth and retention team as needed.

Relationships & Networking

  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective customers, partners, and other key stakeholders.

  • Represent the company in relevant industry associations, forums, conferences, and business development initiatives.

  • Liaise with the department of economic development, local development authorities, chambers of commerce, trade associations, legislative and regulatory affairs, and other key stakeholders in support of the company’s strategic initiatives.

  • Collaborate with architectural firms, engineering firms, developers, site selectors and industry partners to identify and attract new C&I and large load customers.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills)

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • Four-year degree in business, engineering, economics, energy management or related field or 7+ years of gas utility experience

Preferred:

  • MBA or an advanced degree

  • Deep understanding of the energy needs of large-load segments such as food processing, manufacturing, and data centers

Related Work Experience:

Required:

  • BA/BS degree and 3+ years of gas utility experience or 7+ years of gas utility experience

Preferred:

  • 7+ years of experience in business development, sales and marketing, energy services, or strategic account management, preferably in the utility, natural gas or energy infrastructure sectors

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills, capable of influencing at all levels of the organization

  • Strong understanding of the natural gas industry, including regulatory environment, market dynamics, and operational considerations

Preferred:

  • Experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

  • Experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems

  • Experience with Asset & Resource Management (ARM) work management system

  • Experience with economic development processes, utility rate structures, and capital project development

  • Knowledge of natural gas infrastructure planning, alternative fuel technologies, and decarbonization trends

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • The incumbent works in an office environment with occasional trips to the field.

  • This position occasionally requires walking of construction sites and could require the individual to bend, kneel, or crouch from time to time.
