PLEASE NOTE This posting serves to fill multiple Fleet Operations Coordinator positions in the Real-Time Operations group. All positions will be located at The Energy Center in Birmingham.
JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for the intra-day commitment and dispatch of Southern Company generation resources to ensure bulk electric system (BES) reliability, minimize total production costs, and optimize the value of our generation assets. This is achieved through coordination across multiple departments and organizations, including, but not limited to, Generating Plants, Fleet Optimization, Gas Operations, Real-Time Trading, and the Power Coordination Center (PCC), as well as several external customers and counterparties. The role involves monitoring and adjusting generation schedules based on real-time data, market conditions, and system requirements to ensure optimal performance and compliance with regulatory standards. The position requires a deep understanding of power generation processes, economic dispatch principles, and market dynamics to make informed decisions that balance reliability, cost efficiency, and asset optimization.
The position is part of a multi-person team covering 24x7 essential operations, working rotating 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Below is an example of the current shift schedule.
Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, & Sunday (Day Shift 5 AM – 5 PM)
Week 2: Wednesday & Thursday (Day Shift 5 AM – 5 PM)
Week 3: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday (T Shift [40 hours] – 8 hours each day)
Week 4: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, & Sunday (Night Shift 5 PM – 5 AM)
Week 5: Wednesday & Thursday (Night Shift 5 PM – 5 AM)
Week 6: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday (R Shift [32 hours] – 8 hours each day)
Team members must be able to work collaboratively in a high-pressure environment, communicate effectively with various stakeholders, and respond promptly to system emergencies or unexpected events. Occasional travel (approximately 10%-20%) is required and consists primarily of travel within the Southern Company footprint to various plant sites for inspections, meetings, and coordination activities.
This position will be filled at exempt level 6-7.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Job Experience & Education:
5 + years of power plant operations experience highly desirable
Shift work experience is highly desirable
B.S. degree or relevant work experience preferred
Operations Team Leader experience a plus
Transmission or distribution control center operations experience a plus
NERC Certification a plus
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Knowledge of generating plant and/or bulk electric system operations
Knowledge of economic dispatch, gas, and power markets, and/or production cost modeling a plus
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong analytic and organization skills
Excellent critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
Competent to utilize multiple computer-based applications and tools simultaneously
Ability to make sound and timely business decisions in a high-pressure environment
Ability to organize, manage, and direct multiple activities quickly and effectively
Ability to recognize potential problems and develop appropriate plans of action
Ability to issue and execute operating instructions in a professional, timely, and clear manner
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Successful candidate will be expected to obtain North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) Reliability Coordinator Certification within one year from shift start date.
